I am planning another trip to Greece and plan to go to Athens. I have been so many times! I thought I would share with you what I love about it.

  • The Acropolis: Standing majestically above the city, the Acropolis is an iconic symbol of ancient Greece. The Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike are awe-inspiring examples of classical architecture.
  • Plaka District: Wandering through the narrow streets of Plaka feels like stepping back in time. This charming neighborhood is filled with neoclassical buildings, quaint cafes, and souvenir shops.
  • Sunset at Lycabettus Hill: Watching the sunset from Lycabettus Hill offers panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea. It's a magical experience, especially when accompanied by live music at the hilltop chapel.
  • Monastiraki Flea Market: Bargain hunting at Monastiraki Flea Market is a must-do in Athens. You can find everything from antiques and handmade crafts to clothing and jewelry.
  • Street Art in Exarchia: The Exarchia neighborhood is known for its vibrant street art scene. Exploring its graffiti-covered streets is like visiting an open-air art gallery filled with political statements and creative expressions.
To those of you who have been to Athens, what do you love about it? I am looking for ideas!

I spend most of my time in Exarcheia. I walk around finding and photographing street art in the different laneways. I enjoy the restaurants there which are much more traditional Greek than most of the ones in Plaka and Monastiraki. I enjoy the cocktail bars on Koletti street at 1am. I love the vegan souvlakis at Cookoomela Grill on Themistokleous where the owner knows me so well now that he takes out the tsipouro every time I walk in the door even before I have a chance to order!
I also like going to some of the museums, the National Archeological Museum and the Akropolis Museum being my favourites. Also, I always try to go see a concert or preferably a play at Ωδείο Ηρώδου του Αττικού. There is something very special about seeing something at an ancient theatre at the foot of the Akropolis were who knows what famous people have also been walking around 2,000 years ago.

Tips for saving money in Athens?

I'm planning a trip to Athens and though I'm excited, I'm also trying to be mindful of my budget. The charm of historical sites like the Acropolis, the Plaka district, and experiencing the vibrant Greek culture is something I cannot put a price tag on. However, I am looking for ways to stretch my euros further while enjoying what Athens has to offer.

Does anyone have tips or personal experiences to share on saving money while traveling in Athens?

Fun Side Trips While Staying in Athens

I've been to Athens. I have done side trips from Athens. Still, I love Rick Steve's work and I found this interesting! He visited some of the places I've seen, but frankly, he made me want to see them again. This was a fun watch!

One of the places I haven't been that he mentioned is Hydra. Such a cool-looking place.

Best shopping in Athens?

I'm planning a trip to Athens and I'm a bit of a shopaholic. I want to make the most of my time there and experience the best shopping the city has to offer.

From what I've heard, Athens is a treasure trove of markets, boutiques, and shops - but I'd really appreciate some local or experienced insights.

Could anyone recommend:
  • The best areas for unique, local finds?
  • Any specific stores known for quality Greek goods?
  • Tips for navigating the markets?
I've only done historical things in Athens and visited friends. I have never taken the time to shop, but I will have plenty of time in Athens over the summer.

Most touristy areas in Athens?

I’m planning a trip to Athens and I want to make sure I get to experience the most iconic and touristy areas the city has to offer. While I’m all for off-the-beaten-path adventures, I also believe that some places are popular for good reasons, and I’d hate to miss out on those.

Could anyone share their recommendations for must-visit tourist spots in Athens? I’ve heard the Acropolis is a no-brainer, but I’m curious about other places as well. Also, if there are any tips for navigating these areas (best times to visit, ticket hacks, etc.), I’d greatly appreciate it!

Athens Nightlife Questions

I'm currently planning a trip to Athens, Greece, and I've heard so much about the nightlife there. I know that there is great nightlife here, I've just never done it.

Given the vast array of options, I'm reaching out to this community for personal recommendations and insights. What are your favorite nightlife spots in Athens? I'm interested in hearing about places that offer unique experiences, whether it's a bar, club, etc.

If you've had an unforgettable night out in Athens, please share:
  • Name of the place
  • What makes it stand out (music, drinks, crowd, view, etc.)
  • Any tips for newcomers (like dress code)
Also, if there are any must-know cultural etiquettes or tips for enjoying Athens' nightlife responsibly, I'd appreciate learning about those as well.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!
