I am planning my next Greek trip.

I want to go in October but the people I am traveling with - we won't be able to to go until mid-October.

I have been to Crete that late in the year and to Athens, but not anywhere else. On our schedule is to visit some of the smaller islands, like Hydra.

Do places like that shut down? My main concern is, will the tourist shops be closed? I love to browse through them and it's part of my enjoyment.

I don't know about Hydra in particular, when I was working in Mykonos I was still working winding down the operations and a lot of the shops were open for cruise ships ...my opinion would be not all but the locally owned like in Syros are always open for a few hours a day,the atmosphere is very relaxed and actually very pleasant to browse around,In Syros for example the shops sell all kinds of cheeses, nuts olives, herbs, souvenirs on the seafront, visit Syros if you can, you will be surprised how beautiful it is,.....So is Andros and Tinos !....not far from Rafina or Pireaus....I will try and find out additional information later on!

Generally, it ends in October, but that doesn't mean everything will be shut down.

I have been to a few places in Greece in October. I went to Crete the last week of October and some touristy areas were shutting down after that week was over. The main city areas of Chania and Heraklion, though, remained open.

I went to Athens in early October once and it was the same thing.

I found in those places that the crowds had died down and the weather was beautiful - since I don't do a fair amount of shopping when in Greece (I spend most of the time eating, waking, and sitting on the beach) the souvenir shops closing didn't really bother me.

October is a great month to visit Greece! Many tourists will have left, there’s still a lot of fresh produce for those farm-to-table meals, sites will be easier to visit, and the weather (though not a 100% given) will still be sunny and warm in most, particularly southern, locations. Places catering to tourists will typically close down by November 1st, but each year Greece becomes more popular and more of a year-round destination. The only thing to watch when making your plans is that air and ferry schedules will revert to the less frequent Fall schedule.

Sustainable Travel to Greece?

I'm currently planning a trip to Greece and am passionate about making my travel as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. Given the beauty and historical significance of Greece, I want to ensure that my visit contributes positively to the environment and local communities there.

Does anyone have any tips or experiences they could share on sustainable travel practices in Greece? I'm looking for advice on everything from eco-friendly accommodations, sustainable dining options, to ways of exploring the country that minimize my carbon footprint. Also, if there are specific activities or tours that support local conservation efforts or communities, I'd love to hear about those too!

Finding Good Food Tours of Greece?

I love Greek cuisine. I cook it all the time and I love trying new recipes. The time has come for me to think about planning a food tour! Does anyone have any advice?

I would love to hear from members of this forum about their experiences with food tours in Greece.
  1. Which regions or cities offer the best food tours?
  2. Any specific food tour companies or guides that you would recommend?
  3. What were some of the standout dishes or culinary experiences on your tour?
  4. Are there options for people with dietary restrictions, such as vegetarians?
  5. What should one expect in terms of cost and duration?
Any tips or advice on how to get the most out of such a tour would be greatly appreciated too! Thanks!

Canyoning Bled Slovenia

Hi guys!!
I'm planning to take a group canyoning Bled but apparently, it is obligatory to use a local guide. I am a canyon instructor (caf and ffme), is this enough to supervise without anyone else? I have several years of experience (climbing and canyoning) and it is obvious that I will not be able to offer this destination if it is not possible.
Thanks in advance

Greek Islands Food Tour?

I am a foodie and I love to cook. Does anyone know of any food tour situations that I can do in the islands, or maybe island hopping?

I am in the midst of planning an exciting adventure to Greece and am particularly interested in experiencing the country through its cuisine. I've heard that island hopping offers not just stunning views but also a taste of local flavors that differ from island to island.

With so many beautiful islands, from the renowned Santorini to the charming Skopelos, I'm looking for recommendations on food tours or culinary experiences that are part of island hopping packages. Any recommendations you may have would be great!
